GRAMMY Nominated Chrisette Michele to Co-Headline “The Art of Love Tour”
Soulful, jazz-influenced Def Jam recording artist Chrisette Michele, whose RIAA gold debut album I Am, spun off the R&B hit "If I Have My Way" - nominated this year for the Best Female R&B Vocal Grammy Award - will hit the road for a six-week spring/summer U.S. tour, co-headlining with fellow Male R&B Grammy nominee Raheem DeVaughn.
Award Winning Hair Care brand, Mizani continues to support Chrisette Michele while on tour this year in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Atlanta and Miami. Chrisette will support Mizani's salon fundraising efforts with Hairdressers Unlocking Hope, an initiative dedicated to building homes with Habitat for Humanity. Chrisette plans to join Mizani in June for their building project in New Orleans where the Mizani team will dedicate a new home to a family that was misplaced during Hurricane Katrina.
As of this writing, shows will commence May 22 at The Fillmore in San Francisco, and wrap up June 29th at Merriweather Post in Columbia, Maryland. This is Chrisette's first major long-distance touring since last July-August 2007, when she was tapped as opening act for Musiq (Soulchild).
The distinctive jazz and soul inflections of this 25-year old native New Yorker (from Long Island) first caught the ear of Antonio "L.A." Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group. He auditioned Chrisette and told her that he had "goose bumps" after the first time he heard her. "When Chrisette Michele enters a room," said Mr. Reid, "the room becomes a better place, because she's in it." I Am (released June 2007) included production from hitmakers including multi-platinum 10-time Grammy Award winner Babyface.
Chrisette's MySpace website has generated more than 1.78 million total plays, and currently offers full-length versions of four songs from the album: "If I Have My Way", "Your Joy," "Good Girl," and "Best Of Me."
For a visual fix of Chrisette, check the video below, "A Closer Look." The video is a 5-minute interview posted on YouTube. Included are on-screen performance excerpts of "If I Have My Way", "Golden," "Love Is You," "Like a Dream," "Best Of Me," "Good Girl," as well as her duets with Jay-Z (on "Lost Ones") and with Nas (on "Can't Forget About You," which samples Nat King Cole). Along the way, Chrisette shows off her jazz chops with impromptu homage to Billie Holiday ("God Bless the Child") and Ella Fitzgerald (on "Take the 'A' Train").
Raised in a musical family, Chrisette started singing in church where her mother was the choir director and her father played organ. "I did my first solo when I was four years old," she remembers, and then adds, "I've been creating songs since I was twelve, so I knew I needed the right musical blend in order to stand-out from the many other performers trying to get a deal." In addition to Billie and Ella, Chrisette cites Sarah Vaughan, Bing Crosby, and Nat King Cole as primal influences - along with contemporary artists Beyoncé, Kanye West and NAS.
"I'm excited about finding my place amongst young composers like Alicia Keys and Jill Scott," says Chrisette. "My goal from the moment I was signed, was to create a seamless album that mixes soul and pop in a way that will have people coming back again and again." I Am, she says, "is one of the greatest accomplishments that I've ever completed in my entire life. It's very exciting to know that I got to be myself, and I got to say what I wanted to say."
