Universal Music to Rock the AMA’s
This year’s American Music Awards (on ABC this Sunday, 11/18) will be highlighted with performances by some of Universal Music’s leading female artists - Nicole Scherzinger, Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah and Fergie. The AMA’s will be a grand stage for some of Universal Music’s finest performers to display their talents. The star-studded event will also feature performances from Sugarland (who, last week, won the CMA for Vocal Due of the Year), will.i.am and Maroon 5.
Mary J. Blige and Queen Latifah are both industry legends and music icons. Each songstress can be considered one of the most accomplished entertainers of all time. Mary J. Blige has already won 6 Grammy’s and 4 AMA’s. Over the course of her illustrious career, she’s been nominated for more than 100 awards. Music fans can expect another monumental album from the diva; her 9th album, Growing Pains, is slated to hit stores on Tuesday, December 18th. Queen Latifah, who has also won a Grammy Award (“U.N.I.T.Y” - Best Rap Solo Performance, 1994), was nominated for an Emmy after her performance in the movie version of the Broadway play, Chicago, and, in 2006, was presented with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Rihanna, Fergie and Nicole are three of UMG’s most successful, accomplished artists. It’s hard to turn on a TV or walk down the street without hearing one of their glamorous voices blasting from the nearest set of speakers. Each of them is a true musical talent and a star in her own rite. Nicole and Fergie, who both made names for themselves alongside their groups – the Pussy Cat Dolls and Black Eyed Peas, respectively – have established themselves as 2 of the most distinguished artists out there. Rihanna’s consistency over the last 3 years is a display of the talent that Def Jam execs saw when they signed her in 2005. As a result of their hard work and subsequent great music, each singer has carved out her own place amongst her fans’ favorite artists.
Both Fergie and Rihanna have also been nominated for AMA’s this year. Fergie is up for Pop/Rock Female Artist of the Year and Rihanna is hoping to take home award for the Soul/R&B Female Artist of the Year.
Akon, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and Young Jeezy led Universal Music in nominations for this year’s AMA’s – they each picked up 2. Akon is nominated for Male Artist of the Year in both the Pop/Rock and Soul/R&B categories – a true testament to the range of his artistry. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are up for 2 awards in the Rap/Hip-Hop category: Band, Duo or Group and Album of the Year. Young Jeezy is up against his label-mate, Fabolous, for Rap/Hip-Hop Male Artist of the Year and, along with BTNH, is nominated for the Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year.
This year’s Awards, the 35th in the series, will be broadcast this Sunday, November 18th, by ABC. Jimmy Kimmel, who earlier this year hosted the ESPY’s alongside NBA star LeBron James, will host the award show for the 4th time and 2nd year in a row.
In an AMA 1st, this year’s winners were selected by members of the public who voted at ABC’s American Music Award website.
Tune into ABC this Sunday (11/18) at 8PM EST to see who wins and check out the great Universal Music performances.
