Universal Music Holds It Down Across The Pond

Amy Winehouse made a surprise appearance at the MTV Europe Video Music Awards show in Olympiahalle, Munich, Germany last night (November 1st) and went home with an accolade from her peers.

She gave a brief "thanks" when she accepted the "Artist Choice" gong which is an award chosen by fellow musicians. She also performed "Back To Black" the title song from her current album.

The singer was announced as a last-minute addition to the show when she was forced to cancel her planned performance at the mtvU Woodie Awards, in New York on November 8.

Other winners included Nelly Furtado who won the "Album of the Year" for Loose which has featured on Billboard’s European Top 100 Albums chart since it was released in June 2006, including 3 spells at No. 1.

Loose has also made history in Russia this year as the first 5x platinum album by an international artist.

The "Ultimate Urban" prize went to US R&B star Rihanna who topped the UK chart for 10 weeks with monster hit "Umbrella".

German rock band, Tokio Hotel, took the prize for "Best International Act."

Rapper Snoop Dogg hosted the event, which also featured live performances from Mika and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger who officially launched her solo career in Europe at the prestigious music event with a duet with Black Eyed Peas singer will.i.am.
