Mika Goes Home with Clutch of World Music Awards
Mika was one of the big winners at the World Music Awards in Monte Carlo last night (November 4th), taking home four prizes including World's Best Selling New Artist.
The 19th Annual World Music Awards took place in its original home of Monte Carlo, Monaco. It returned to the venue it had previously been held for 15 years after moving to Las Vegas (2004), Los Angeles (2005) and London in 2006.
John Kennedy, Chairman of the IFPI Worldwide attended the ceremony to honor the winners in person.
Mika took home four gongs in Monte Carlo last night (November 4th). The Lebanese singer collected awards for Best Selling Pop/Rock Artist, Best Selling New Artist, Best Selling male entertainer, and Best Selling British Artist. Unfortunately, a throat infection prevented Mika from performing at the ceremony.
Rihanna, however put on a rousing performance for the star studded audience after collecting awards for Best Selling Pop Female Artist and Female Entertainer of the year. She sang her record breaking hit "Umbrella".
Senegalese artist Akon was very pleased to receive his first plaudits as a recording artist. He picked up prizes for Best Selling R&B Male Artist, Best Selling African Artist and Best Selling Internet artist.
50 Cent was happy to perform at the show after he was proved to be the World's Best Selling Rap/Hip Hop Artist.
The World Music awards are given to artists according to record sales, and not by a panelist vote or public opinion. To certify the sales the WMAs co-operate with the International Federation of The Phonographic Industry
The show was taped and will be broadcast later in 160 countries. It is expected to reach approximately one billion viewers. The program will air in the UK on November 27 on Channel 4, in the US on November 22nd on MYNETWORKTV and in France on November 24th on W9.
