Kerli Shakes Up European Pop With Island Release "Love Is Dead"
(April 4, 2008 – New York, NY) With her exotic looks, seductive vocal style, and hypnotic demeanor, newly signed Island Records artist Kerli has outgrown her Estonian homeland and steered a course to new world pop. In turn, a torrent of fascinating visuals have been unleashed on her MySpace page, along with six tracks from her upcoming debut album, Love Is Dead, in stores June 10th.
One of those tracks, Kerli’s new single, “Walking On Air,” is surfacing at triple-A, Alternative and college radio, after it was included in the Download.com newsletter in January. “Walking On Air” officially impacts at the Alternative Specialty format on April 14th and AAA on April 28th .
At the same time, another track, “Creepshow” (whose chorus proclaims of Estonia, “Nobody knows where it’s at/ nobody knows where it’s at,” a double-entendre) can be heard in the EA videogame, “Burnout Paradise” (released in January). Also, a viral video for the title track “Love Is Dead” tore up the Internet and was streamed over 350,000 times. All this attention has driven over 690,000 profile views to Kerli’s MySpace website, and more than 1.1 million plays. The site contains full-length versions of “Walking On Air,” “Creepshow,” “Love Is Dead,” “Hurt Me,” “Beautiful Day,” and “Bullet Proof.”

Kerli’s edgy musical savvy – drawing comparisons to Amy Lee of Evanescence and Bjork – grew at least partly from her upbringing in Estonia, which regained its independence from the USSR in 1991, when she was just four years old. A product of “tough love,” Kerli spent most of her childhood seeking to transcend her surroundings by immersing herself in the arts, studying vocals, ballet, acting, and classical piano. By the time she turned 14, she knew what her focus would be. “I was so sure that my life was going to be all about singing,” Kerli says, that “I quit everything else.”
In order to enter the Fizz Superstar 2002 competition, a Baltic equivalent of American Idol, Kerli lied about her age (the minimum was 15) – and won. After a multitude of additional television appearances and performances, the exposure won her a personal audition in June 2006 with Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group, who signed Kerli to Island Records on the spot. She quickly got to work on Love Is Dead, which includes “Beautiful Day,” a track she wrote with Benji Madden.
Kerli is a fascinating, magnetic young presence, whose talents as a songwriter are progressing at an extraordinary pace. “I’m trying to create a world around my music,” she says. “And this world needs to be pure, real, honest and beautiful but still a little interesting, dark and definitely mysterious.”
