Amy Winehouse & Kanye West Top Grammy Award Winners
Top nominees Amy Winehouse and Kanye West walk away with the most plaudits - 9 between the 2 of them - at the 50th GRAMMY awards in Los Angeles, CA last night (Feb 10th).
Amy Winehouse was visibly stunned when she was awarded the Grammy for "Record Of The Year" for her song "Rehab".
She took home 5 awards in total: "Record Of The Year", "Song Of The Year" and "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" for "Rehab". "Best Pop Vocal Album" for Back to Black and "Best New Artist", she is the first British winner of this award since Sade in 1986.
Amy was unable to attend the ceremony but performed "Rehab" and "You Know I’m No Good", both taken from Back to Black, via live-broadcast from the Riverside Studios, London, where she played live in front of a small audience. Due to lengthy time delays she had to stay up until 4am to sing live for the L.A. audience.
In what some would call an upset, Herbie Hancock beat out both Amy Winehouse and Kanye West for "Album of the Year". Jazz legend Herbie Hancock was awarded for River: The Joni Letters, his tribute to singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell - only the second time a jazz album has triumphed in the 50-year history of the Grammys. The album also picked up the Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
Kanye West, who was nominated for eight awards, took home four Grammys last night.
He picked up "Best Rap Album" for Graduation, "Best Rap Solo Performance" for "Stronger", "Best Rap Song" for "Good Life" and "Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group" for his collaboration with Common on "Southside".
During the ceremony, Kanye performed "Stronger" and "Hey Mama", the latter song dedicated to his mother, Donda, who died last year from a heart attack after surgery.
“I appreciate all the support, I appreciate all the prayers,” he said. “Mama, all I'm gonna do is keep making you proud.”
