Who Is This Girl? Estonia’s Hottest New Export
Last night (2/20) in lower Manhattan’s Canal Room a girl’s voice left an audience stunned and speechless. Kerli, hailing from the town of Elva, Estonia, proved in her New York debut that her music and voice are undeniably powerful. Somewhere in between Evanescence and Avril Lavigne, but with Bjork’s edge, Kerli’s songs range from creepy fairytales to grandiose pop hooks – all in the same composition. Her melodies are dark but infectious; her lyrics vivid yet fanciful. “This song is me,” Kerli said of her opening song, “Walking On Air,” where she describes herself as a “little creepy girl” from a “little creepy town” who “loves to sing.”

Belying her petite body, Kerli’s pipes are anything but “little.” When she was only 14 she appeared on the Baltic version of American Idol (lying about her age to meet the age requirement), and after a few years of talent competitions her music reached the ear of Island Def Jam Chairman L.A. Reid, who signed her on the spot. Kerli’s debut album, featuring production by David Maurice, Lester Mendez, and the Madden Brothers, is slated to hit stores this spring, but if you’re like us and you just can’t wait, you can download her songs from iTunes.
Mixing electronic, alternative and atmospheric music, Kerli is a star for the Myspace generation. Her lyrics revolve around dissolution and loss, yet encourage the listener to find love and beauty in the world around us. "Everyone understands love," Kerli said in an interview with Absolute Punk. "That's what my music is about."
