UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP BREAKS MARKET SHARE RECORD
UMG Leads Industry with 37.5% and 15 of the Top 30 Albums Week-Ending November 5, 2000
Santa Monica, California, November 8, 2000 – Universal Music Group (UMG) surpassed it’s own history-making record this week by achieving the largest single-week market share of current albums ever, 37.5%, for the week-ending November 5, 2000, according to Soundscan.
Fueling UMG’s market share were four albums in the top 5 which included the No. 1 debut of Jay-Z’s The Dynasty Roc La Familia 2000 (Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam); U2’s All That You Leave Behind [No. 3] (Interscope); Limp Bizkit’s Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water [No. 4] (Flip/Interscope); and Godsmack’s Awake [No. 5] (Republic/Universal).
UMG had a total of fifteen albums in the top 30 this week. Also in the top 30 were Nelly’s Country Grammar [No. 6] (Universal); Ja Rule’s Rule 3:36 [No. 10] (Def Jam); Ludacris’ Back for the First Time [No. 12] (Def Jam South); 3 Doors Down’s The Better Life [No. 13] (Republic/Universal); Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP [No. 18] (Aftermath/Interscope); 98 Degrees’ Revelation [No. 19] (Universal); Insane Clown Posse’s Bizaar [No. 20] (Island); Insane Clown Posse’s Bizzar [No. 21] (Island); Papa Roach’s Infest [No. 27] (DreamWorks); Shaggy’s Hot Shot [No. 28] (MCA) and NOW That’s What I Call Music, Vol. 4 [No. 30](Universal Music Enterprises).
UMG held the peak position on ten various Soundscan charts. Jay-Z is No. 1 on both the Top R&B Albums and Top Rap Albums chart. The R&B Singles Sales chart is topped by Erykah Badu’s Bag Lady (Motown). U2’s All That You Can’t Leave Behind tops the Internet Sales charts, outpacing its nearest competitor by nearly 6 to 1. Andrea Bocelli’s Verdi (Philips) is No. 1 on both the Traditional Classical and Overall Classical charts. Diana Krall’s When I Look In Your Eyes (Verve) tops the Traditional Jazz charts. Godsmack’s self-titled debut (Universal) remains No. 1 on the Catalog Albums chart.
