UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP DISTRIBUTION (UMGD) CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH AMAZON.COM & OVER 100 MUSIC RETAILERS
LOS ANGELES, February 12, 2009 – Universal Music Group Distribution (UMGD), the award-winning sales and marketing division of Universal Music Group, the world’s leading music company, has joined with Amazon and over 100 music retailers nationwide to celebrate Black History Month with “Celebrate our History to Change the Future,” an exciting campaign that will run throughout February
“Celebrate our History to Change the Future” focuses on the legendary Motown (celebrating their 50th anniversary), Stax, and Chess record labels. For many decades, these fantastic institutions have brought us memorable songs from musical greats such as; Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Isaac Hayes, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Etta James, Chuck Berry and so many other household-name artists. To honor the legacy of these labels, UMGD commissioned renowned California artist Kenji to create an original watercolor themed painting around some of the artists that make these historical labels so significant. A reproduction of her artwork is being offered as an exclusive gift with purchase at 100 independent and chain retailers across America. At these participating stores, customers will receive a free limited edition art poster of the Kenji original with purchase of any album from the Motown, Stax, or Chess labels (*while supplies last).
UMGD and Amazon.com are also running an exclusive flyaway sweepstakes. One lucky winner and their guest will have the choice to visit either Memphis or Chicago to partake in a 3-day excursion including tours, sightseeing, and entertainment. This trip to Memphis, the home of renowned Southern soul label Stax Records, or Chicago, the birthplace of “America’s greatest blues label” Chess Records, will provide a great backdrop to a musical experience of a lifetime!
Lastly, Amazon and Amazonmp3 are running a month long campaign featuring all titles on both of these unprecedented labels. Stax and Chess will be offering a free digital sampler as a gift with or without purchase of any of their respective titles. On February 16th, Stax will launch their portion of the promotion with Chess to follow one week later.
During this epic time of change, let us celebrate all the contributions of our rich musical history!
