(October 9, 2006 New York, NY) Shakir Stewart has been promoted to senior Vice President, A&R, Island Def Jam Music Group, it was announced today by Antonio L.A. Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group, and Shawn (JAY-Z) Carter, President, Def Jam Recordings.
In his new post, Mr. Stewart will actively seek out, acquire and develop new talent, and oversee recording projects from the creative standpoint, including solicitation of producers and repertoire on behalf of their artists. Mr. Stewart, who has offices in Atlanta and in New York, will report directly to Mr. Reid and Mr. Carter.
Since his arrival at Def Jam Records two years ago, said Mr. Reid, Shakir has proven himself to be a remarkable judge of talent and a valuable addition to our A&R focus. His knowledge of the inner workings of the industry in general and IDJ in particular, makes him the perfect choice for this key position.
"Shakir has an understanding of the ever changing face of music and most importantly he understands artists and the creative process. said Mr. Carter. His ear, vision and business instincts have made him an invaluable player on our team. I swear he never sleeps and is so in tune with what's going on in the streets. It was he who called whispering in the phone that we had to move on a then unknown Rick Ross...Great instincts."
Working alongside L.A. Reid, Shawn Carter, and Steve Bartels has been an incredible experience for me, said Mr. Stewart. The excitement at Island Def Jam is the talk of the entire industry and I am proud to play an intricate role in the label's success."
