Universal Music Group Chairman and CEO joins a distinguished list of recipients including Michael Bloomberg, Deepak Chopra and Quincy Jones

Santa Monica, March 28, 2019 – Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group (UMG), the world leader in music-based entertainment, was honored with the prestigious Icon Award at this year’s PTTOW! Summit.

The PTTOW! Icon Award recognizes individuals who are trailblazers in their industries and who have had an impact on culture around the world. The invite-only conference held in Dana Point, California, is an annual gathering of top executives and cultural influencers from more than 70 industries across technology, media, marketing and social good.

Republic Records artist James Bay, three-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated and BRIT Award-winning multiplatinum singer-songwriter, performed “Peer Pressure” and “Let it Go.” Following, he presented the Icon award to Grainge and said, “The most exciting thing that you can do as an artist is to take a risk. It can also be the scariest. When you’ve got someone in your corner as successful as this man, it’s only more inspiring to take that leap.”

After accepting the award, Grainge was joined by Elvis Mitchell, host of KCRW’s The Treatment, for a conversation about his career, UMG’s leadership role and the evolution of the music industry.

Since becoming Chairman and CEO in 2011, Grainge has transformed UMG by pioneering new approaches to signing and developing recording artists and songwriters and championing innovative business models with a wide range of media and technology partners. Throughout his career, Grainge has been recognized for his many achievements, including being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in June 2018 with the Howie Richmond Hitmaker award and Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity’s 2017 Media Person of the Year, becoming the first music executive to be recognized with the award. Billboard named Grainge No. 1 on its 2019 Power 100, an honor he had earlier received in 2016, 2015 and 2013, the only person to hold that distinction multiple times and for consecutive years.
