HONG KONG, 11 July, 2003 – Universal Music has signed an exclusive four-year sales and distribution deal with Asia’s most prominent independent record label, Rock Records, announced Harry Hui, President of Universal Music Southeast Asia.

The agreement with the Taiwan-based company will include all back catalogue and forthcoming releases in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Korea. The exclusive pact has also set the framework for the two leading music companies to pursue joint-venture initiatives that will include 50 compilation albums.

Harry Hui said, “Rock Records is one of the best A&R companies in Asia and I believe this alliance will give Rock the continuity to deliver even more top hits. The Rock catalogue is also one of the finest collection of hits in Asia. The joint venture initiatives will capitalise on the wave of changing tastes in music consumption and distribution today.”

Since its inception in 1994, Rock Records has established itself as the dominant independent Chinese label with strongholds around Asia. The label has the biggest and strongest catalogue of Mandarin-language hits in the region.

The artists whose careers Rock has launched include such top musical acts as Wu Bai, Tarcy Su, Emil Chau, Mayday, Bobby Chen, Ambrose Hsi, and Richie Ren.

“Rock Records has always adopted an international approach for our distribution and marketing strategies. Our alliance with Universal Music is an extension of our original vision and I am very confident that this will allow Rock Records to continue building on its strength in Asia,” said Sam Duann, Chief Executive Officer of Rock Records.
