UNIVERSAL MUSIC SOUTH EAST ASIA PRESIDENT SANDY MONTEIRO ADDS TO HIS RESPONSIBILITIES WITH THE NEW ROLE OF HEAD OF NEW BUSINESS, ASIA PACIFIC
13 May 2013 – Sandy Monteiro, Universal Music’s President, South East Asia, has expanded his responsibilities to include the new position of Head of New Business for Asia Pacific, it was announced today by George Ash, President Asia Pacific for Universal Music.
As President, South East Asia, Monteiro is currently responsible for Universal’s Asian Regional Office and operating companies in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, The Philippines and Korea. He will now additionally head Universal Music’s New Business Division for the Asia Pacific region outside of Japan, significantly expanding the company’s commitment to Asia by identifying and overseeing new and dynamic business opportunities for Universal Music and its artists.
George Ash said: “Sandy is a highly regarded and successful executive in the Asian region who has achieved outstanding success and transformed Universal’s operations to make us the clear market leader. I am excited that Sandy will now be applying his immense knowledge and skills to expand our New Business activities across the Asia Pacific region.”
Monteiro is a long standing music industry executive in Asia, with broad experience ranging from digital and new business experience to copyright protection and lobbying to anti-piracy advocacy. His music career began in 1993 as Head of International with Warner Music Malaysia before joining Universal Music Malaysia two years later. During this time Monteiro lead a significant drive for copyright protection in Asia as General Manager and later as Executive Director of the Recording Industry Association of Malaysia in what is considered a benchmark for copyright education and enforcement by industry bodies in Asia. In 2000 he joined digital music start-up Soundbuzz as General Manager SE Asia and Regional Director of Music and Marketing for Asia where he engineered a framework for licensing music rights in the budding digital music environment, developing innovative music platforms and applications with major companies such as Creative Technologies, Hewlett-Packard, Nokia and Microsoft.
Monteiro returned to Universal Music as Managing Director of Universal Music Malaysia in 2002 where he successfully integrated digital into the business. He was appointed Vice President (Digital) for South East Asia and later Senior Vice President of UMGI for ASEAN and since 2010 has been President of UMG for South East Asia, leading the region’s renewed growth and success in digital platforms and new business strategies.
He is currently the Chairman of the Recording Industry Association of Singapore and is a member of the Asia Pacific Board for IFPI.
