LONDON, October 5, 2004 – Universal Music International and Mattel have announced a new deal to launch Barbie™-branded music compilations.

The first album in the series, Barbie™ Girls, will be released around Europe on November 15, in time for the Christmas market. It will contain tracks by Sugababes, Christina Milian, Girls Aloud, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and S Club 7, among others.

Universal Music International has a highly successful track record in the children’s market, with recent hit albums such as Hits For Kids and Pop Party. Stan Roche, Vice President for TV Marketing at Universal Music International, said, “The Barbie™ brand is the number one girls brand for three- to eight-year-olds. It has a very sizeable, very loyal fan base, and it fits perfectly with our existing compliment of teen, pre-teen and kids compilation brands.

“With Universal’s ongoing strength in pop repertoire, we anticipate a long and fruitful relationship in developing this compilation brand with Mattel. The opportunities for both companies to cross-promote each other’s products are massive.”

Barbie™ Girls will be heavily supported with TV advertising. Tim Ferrone, Product Manager at Universal Music International, said, “This will make an ideal gift purchase in the Christmas market. Breaking Barbie™ as a compilation brand in Europe will be a priority for us in 2004-2005.”

Rosa Zeegers, Vice President, Mattel Brands Consumer Products Europe, Middle East and Africa, commented, “We know that pop music has a big influence and is very relevant to today’s girl, therefore it is a natural extension for us to extend the Barbie® brand into the music category.”
