Santa Monica, California, May 15, 2000 – Universal Music Group has just made it easier for its strategic industry partners to access the full breadth of artist and album information on all UMG-affiliated labels with the introduction of the Universal Business Tools Extranet. A full-service business-to-business website, the Extranet permits registered users to download a wide range of data, including publicity materials, artwork, tour information, sales policies, point-of-purchase inventories, and much more.

Launched this past week, the secure password-protected site ( makes available everything from artist bios, photos, press releases and other up-to-date artist news, to album covers, solicitation sheets, minis, UMG staff contact information, and links to NARM, Pollstar, MTV On-Line, and other key industry entities. The Extranet features all this material on upcoming and current releases, as well as a large number of UMG’s catalog titles. Catalog product will continue to be phased in over the ensuing months, as will an in-house artist itinerary page.

The easy-to-navigate site boasts a handful of main pages, among them New Release, Catalog, Artwork, Publicity, Tours, Sales Communication, Help, and Feedback. All UMG labels are represented, including Def Jam, Def Soul, Interscope Geffen A&M Records, Hip-O Records, Island, MCA Records, MCA Nashville, Mercury Nashville, Universal Latino, Universal/Motown Records Group, Universal Classics Group, UTV, The Verve Music Group, DreamWorks, and UMVD’s associated labels. As the site evolves over time, the Extranet will eventually provide links not only to the individual label sites, but to the label’s own artist sites as well.

Said Scott Belmont, Senior Vice President, Information Technology, N.A., Universal Music Group, “The Extranet will be a significant resource for the industry, particularly for mainstream press and independent music journalists who need ready access to bios, photos and other important materials. It also offers an easy tool for retail to access materials that they need.”
