MACHETE MUSIC APPOINTS DAVID JUNK TO GENERAL MANAGER
New York, New York, March 27, 2006 – Machete Music, the first full service, start-up label from a major record company dedicated to the burgeoning Latin urban music market, has appointed David Junk to General Manager, it was announced today by Gus Lopez, President of the company, and Jesus Lopez, Chairman of Universal Latin America & Iberian Peninsula.
“We’re delighted to have someone with David’s unique background and skill set join our team to help us take Machete to the next level,” stated Gus Lopez. “He’s an American who made Universal’s company in Russia the market leader. And he signed and developed the biggest selling artist ever in Russia–Tatu– and found a way to make the group the first act in their country’s history to sell millions of units outside of Russia. He’s a true entrepreneur whose management skills and international experience will be critically important to Machete and its artists in the years to come.”
“Having the opportunity to work with Gus, Jesus, and such a dynamic team of executives and artists is a real honor,” added Mr. Junk. “Moving ahead, our goals are clear: to expand Machete, while fostering a creative environment where artists can thrive and where employees can reach their career potential.”
Prior to joining Machete, Mr. Junk served as Managing Director of Universal Music Russia. Formerly, Mr. Junk worked for PolyGram Russia – the first western record company to establish a subsidiary in the country – in 1995. He was promoted to Managing Director in 1999, and in 2003, after the merger between Universal and Polygram, extended his management responsibilities to include Universal Music Group International’s licensees in the former Eastern Bloc.
Machete has quickly established itself as the leading Latin urban music company in the world, with a chart-topping roster of artists that includes Don Omar, Wisin y Yandel, Abusivo, Malverde, Glory, Noztra, Luna and Hector “El Father”, among many others. Most recently, Machete made history with Wisin y Yandel scoring four tracks simultaneously on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart.
