Santa Monica, California, August 22, 2001 – John Echevarria has been named President, Universal Music Latino, it was announced today by Jesus Lopez, Chairman, Universal Music Latin America and Iberian Peninsula.

Based in Miami, Mr. Echevarria will lead Universal Music’s U.S. Latin music company and will report directly to Mr. Lopez.

This much-anticipated appointment is a major step in the final formation of a new management team within Universal Music Latin America which began with Mr. Lopez being named Chairman of the company’s Regional Office earlier this summer.

Mr. Lopez comments, “John is a professional with a great deal of experience in diverse Latin markets and in different areas of our business. His solid experience will be beneficial as we further develop our Latin business within Universal Music, particularly within a complex and very competitive market like the U.S. I am proud to have him lead our team.”

Mr. Echevarria adds, “I am very honored to have the opportunity to lead Universal Music Latino. The Latin market has increased tremendously in the past years, not only economically, but demographically as well. Undoubtedly, this is an opportunity and a challenge about which I am thrilled.”

Mr. Echevarria joins Universal from Sony Music International where he worked for eight years, most recently serving as Vice President, Music Publishing, Latin America. His previous music experience includes working for several years at CBS Records and Virgin Espana in marketing and finance roles. Mr. Echevarria began his career as an analyst for Compania Espanola de Petroleos (CEPSA) in Madrid.

Mr. Echevarria holds a master’s degree in Economics from Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
