UMC Holds 5 of the Top 10 Traditional Classical Albums Of 2014 Including the #1 Recording From Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles

New York, NY, December 19, 2014  – Universal Music Classics (UMC), a division of Universal Music Group, closes out 2014 with significant achievements in its field, reigning as Billboard’s #1 Traditional Classical Album Label of 2014, ahead of such competitors as Sony Masterworks and Warner Classics.

In addition, UMC boasts five out of the Top 10 selling albums on Billboard’s Classical Traditional Album Chart, including the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles who are the top-selling artist for the second consecutive year in a row on DeMontfort/Decca/UMC. The Nuns’ unlikely success story includes a string of three chart-topping records. The group of cloistered singing Sisters continues to resonate with consumers year-over-year with their pure, pristine recordings.

Additional top-selling artists in the UMC family who rank as the top-selling Billboard Traditional Classical Artists include the iconic worldwide superstar Andrea Bocelli (Decca/Sugar/UMC), pianist Yuja Wang (Deutsche Grammophon), American violinist Hilary Hahn (Deutsche Grammophon) and the Dominican Sisters of Mary (DeMontfort Music/UMC).

Elizabeth Sobol, President & CEO of Universal Music Classics comments, “Only one year after re-launching the Universal Music Classics division and label, we are proud to see our collective work and achievements reflected in this way. It is an honor and privilege to be able to work with artists and repertoire of such integrity and it is gratifying to see music lovers respond in kind.”

Sobol and UMC are committed to the best that “classics” stands for – music rooted in the classical tradition, while also encompassing a variety of genres including contemporary, jazz, and world. UMC aims to “re-imagine classics,” with a new focus on U.S. based A&R signings, while remaining the American home of the prestigious Decca, Deutsche Grammophon and Mercury Classics imprints, and continuing its long-standing relationship with the esteemed ECM label.
