The Story: Erin McCarley
An Exclusive Intview with Erin's Universal Motown A&R
How did you discover Erin McCarley?
I ran into a group of folks, including Erin’s future co- manager Justin Eshak, at SXSW who suggested that I come with them to see her play. Needless to say she was fantastic. It’s rare in A&R that the first time you hear someone’s music is live. This was a very organic and “old school” process. It’s strange to say, especially these days, but the internet played no part in finding Erin.
What excited you most about Erin?
I found Erin’s music and live performance moving and compelling. You can become fairly numb seeing so many bands while at SXSW but I was just floored by Erin’s performance.
What did Erin McCarley’s music make you feel?
I’m not really sure how to answer this question as each song brings you to another place emotionally. I did feel an intimacy between her and the audience which you rarely find.
When did you know that Erin McCarley would be the next sensation?
I’d have to say the first time I saw her. Erin’s music sounds strangely traditional and cutting edge at the same time. To me that is something fresh and deserving of being the “next sensation”.
What about Erin has you passionate about working with her?
“Gotta Figure This Out” was the last song that Erin recorded and for me it is one of her best. I’ve always been passionate about artists who push themselves creatively and I felt that from Erin throughout this process. She just continued to raise the bar artistically.
Who would you say Erin McCarley reminds you most of?
The reason I love Erin is that she doesn’t remind me of any one in particular. Her sound is somehow uniquely her own.
What track on Love, Save The Empty was the most interesting to do?
I’ve always found “Pitter-Pat” bravely revealing in it’s lyrical content and melodic sensibility. I don’t know if I find it the most interesting track but I’d say that it is the most moving for me.
Who would you like to get Erin McCarley the studio with?
I’d love to have her work with Jon Brion.
What can the world expect from Erin McCarley?
Honesty
