UNIVERSAL MUSIC PUBLISHING GROUP APPOINTS JOHN ECHEVARRIA TO EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT, LATIN AMERICA


Santa Monica, CA, June 4, 2012 — Zach Horowitz, Chairman & CEO, Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) today announced the appointment of John Echevarria to Executive Vice President, Universal Music Publishing Group, Latin America. Mr. Echevarria will oversee all of UMPG’s operations throughout Latin America as well as its Latin division in the US. He will be based at the company’s Miami offices. Eddie Fernandez has departed the company. 

In his new role, Mr. Echevarria will head the company’s Latin America creative teams, overseeing a diverse catalog and roster which includes some of the world’s most revered Latin music songwriters and artists: Ruben Blades, Chino Y Nacho, the catalogues of Gloria and Emilio Estefan Jr., Juan Gabriel, Gustavo Galindo, Juanes, Los Amigos Invisibles, Nely, Rudy Perez, Jorge Luis Piloto, KC Porter, A.B. Quintanilla III, Kike Santander, Gustavo Santaolalla, Sergio Vallin, and Wisin & Yandel, amongst others.

Mr. Echevarria was previously Executive Vice-president of Operations for Latin America of Universal Music Group International, overseeing the operations of the business in the region. Since 2008 Mr Echevarria has also been serving as acting President of the UMGI Andean Region. Prior to that he was President of Universal Music Latino, responsible for the company's operations in the US Latin market. During his tenure there, Mr. Echevarria played a key role in the development of Latin stars such asJuanes, Paulina Rubio, and Luis Fonsi, among others. 

Prior to joining Universal Music, Mr. Echevarria worked at Sony/ATV for eight years, heading up their publishing operations for Latin America. He brought the company to the forefront of the Latin music scene with signings including Shakira, Marc Anthony, Estefano, Elvis Crespo, Omar Alfanno, and may others. He began his career at CBS Records in marketing and finance roles. Mr. Echevarria has served on numerous copyright collecting agencies. He established and managed CEDRO (Centro Español de Derechos Reprograficos) from 1989 to 1991 and was General Manager of  Artistas, Interpretes y Ejecutantes - AIE from 1991 to 1993. He also served as consultant on Intellectual Property matters to VEGAP (Visual, Entidad de Gestión de Artistas Plásticos) and to CERLALC (Centro Regional para el Libro y la Lectura de América Latina y el Caribe).

Working to aggressively protect the rights of songwriters and copyright owners, Mr. Echevarria has served as a board member for the Intellectual Property Mixed Ministerial Commission in Spain; the Iberoamerican Intellectual Property Congress; the International Federation of Reprographic Rights Organizations (IFRRO); the Latin American Federation of Music Publishers (FLADEM); and the Spanish Association of Music Publishers (AEDEM).
