UMG Artists Make Large Impact at 35th Annual American Music Awards
Last night, November 18, the 35th Annual American Music Awards were held live at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
Universal Music’s presence was felt the entire evening. Fergie opened the show with three songs from her debut solo album, The Dutchess. Black Eyed Peas band mate Will.i.am joined her on “Fergalicious.” Fergie then went into “Clumsy” and closed her set with her hit ballad, “Big Girls Don’t Cry.”
Will.i.am then returned to the stage to perform “Heartbreaker” off of his recent solo album, Songs About Girls. Pussycat Dolls star Nicole Scherzinger then took the stage along with Will.i.am performing her single, “Baby Love,” which is set to appear on her debut album Her Name Is Nicole.
Fergie was honored with the award for Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist. Other winners included: Akon for Favorite Soul/Rhythm & Blues Male Artist, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hip Band, Duo or Group, and Rihanna for Favorite Soul/Rhythm & Blues Female Artist, whose ubiquitous single “Umbrella” was the hit of the summer.
For the first time in the show’s history, the winners were chosen by public online votes. Beyonce also came out to perform a very special bluegrass version of “Irreplaceable” with Mercury Nashville artists Sugarland. Rihanna later performed “Umbrella” with a full string section and then transitioned into her single “Hate That I Love” featuring Ne-Yo. Other UMG performers included Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, and Maroon 5 with “Won’t Go Home Without You.”
