The-Dream Becomes a Reality with Debut Album Set to Release
Multi-talented songwriter, artist and producer, Terius "The-Dream" Nash, widely-known for his work on Rihanna’s hit-song "Umbrella", is coming into his own with the release of his debut album, LOVE HATE. This hotly anticipated album arrives in stores tomorrow, Tuesday, December 11th. The debut, a Def Jam production that was co-produced by Tricky Stewart, could not arrive at a more ideal time for The-Dream. Recently, he was named "Hot Songwriter" on Rolling Stone’s “Hot List,” “Rated Next” on BET, and “Discover & Download” on MTV.
While many who haven’t taken notice would consider The-Dream an overnight success, he’s been writing for years now and his catalog includes collaborations with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Celine Dion, B2K, Madonna and Britney Spears. When he moved to Atlanta and first partnered with Tricky Stewart, he co-created the widely successful “Everything” on B2K’s album Pandemonium!, and “Me Against The Music,” the 2003 Britney Spears and Madonna duet.
As The-Dream recalls: "A year after B2K, I did the Britney Spears and Madonna record. I recorded vocals and wrote to that record after Tricky, the guy I did 'Umbrella' with, decided he didn't want the track anymore. I was the new guy in the building so I stayed overnight running in and out the booth recording myself in Pro Tools. Tricky and a writer before me, Penelope, went up to N.Y. [to meet] Britney. They played a lot of songs and Britney was like, ‘I dunno.’ Then they got to ‘Me Against the Music’ and she was like, ‘Oh, I'm digging that. I love that hook!’”
Unfortunately, that song didn't push The-Dream to the level he wanted to reach. He spent two years working on other projects including Nivea's second album, which he executive produced. "Trick and I just started making records. By the time we got to ‘Umbrella’ we were like 'ok, we got it.'" Dream insisted that L.A Reid hear the song and the rest is history.
In advance of the album, The-Dream’s debut single “Shawty Is A 10” jumps inside the Top 10 this week on the Hot 100, Urban, and Rhythmic Billboard charts. LOVE HATE contains the hit single’s explicit alternate remix, “Shawty Is da Sh*t! (10)” featuring Fabolous. Currently, its accompanying music video, which co-stars 2003 Playboy “Playmate of the Year” Christina Santiago, runs in the Top 5 on BET’s#1-rated countdown show, “106 & Park”. LOVE HATE also includes “Falsetto”, the album’s second hit single, whose video premiered last week on MTV’s TRL.
LOVE HATE has already been named #7 Album Of The Year by Blender. As Blender reports: "His debut is a sublimely skanky gallery of hormonal yarns, love triangles, androgynous falsetto and skittering digital beats. In 2007, freaks ruled the R&B roost, and The-Dream was the freakiest of them all."
When asked about his debut The-Dream responds: “It’s more of what I’m giving other people,” he says of his masterwork. “It’s like the ’80s, its musical. I’m doing the ‘Umbrella’ routine to this whole album. All of my records are singles. The album is really visual as well, it appeals to all your senses similar to ‘Thriller’."
Songs like the soulful "She Needs My Love" and "Falsetto" solidify The-Dream’s status as a triple threat: singer, writer and producer. Now The-Dream is finally in the building, combining all of his hit-making talents for his debut, LOVE (Me All Summer), HATE (Me All Winter). Throughout his career, The-Dream has seen people change like the weather; but, in the coming months he is forecasting a 100% chance of reign.
