Stevie Wonder Performs At The White House
25-time Grammy award winning artist and Motown legend Stevie Wonder was given the Library of Congress' Gershwin Prize for Popular Song during an East Room concert in the White House this past Wednesday, February 25. The honor is given annually for lifetime achievement in popular music and was presented this past ceremony, by our country’s leader and longtime Wonder admirer, president Barrack Obama. The tribute consisted of an ensemble concert by the likes of such celebrated musicians as, Martina McBride, Tony Benet and of course, a command performance by the honoree himself, Mr. Wonder.
As an avid listener of Stevie Wonder and Motown Records, President Obama had eloquent praise for the artist, stating instances in his personal life in which Wonder’s music had a direct influence on his growth as a person. President Obama went as far as to say that Wonder provided the soundtrack to his youth and even cited the musician as the source for meeting his wife, first lady Michelle Obama.
In a heartfelt response, Mr. Wonder spoke highly of our newly elected president and the continued racial strives he had wished to see overcome while in his youth. Wonder displayed feelings of genuine pride and explained how refreshing and historically groundbreaking it is to see the African American community take such significant steps in insuring equality in our nation by voting the United State’s first black president into office.
As part of White House series of the arts on PBS, don’t forget to catch Stevie Wonder’s memorable performance this upcoming Thursday, March 5th.
