Shelby Lynne Takes On Dusty Springfield
Country music's "bad girl" returns this month with her 10th studio album, Just A Little Lovin'. But this is no ordinary Shelby record - it's a tribute to the great Dusty Springfield, recorded by legendary producer Phil Ramone (Barbara Streisand, Billy Joel, Frank Sinatra) at the famed Capital Studio A in Los Angeles. Nine of the ten tracks are newly arranged versions of songs from the Dusty Springfield catalog, including "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me."
Shelby began her career in country in the 90's when she was labeled a "problem child" in Nashville - a town that doesn't make it easy for newcomers, particularly a racy upstart such as Lynne. This new album, though, reflects a maturation in Lynne's attitude and career. The songs of Springfield, another singer with a haunting voice and haunted past, lend themselves well to Lynne's modern yet weathered voice. "I am the youngest dinosaur, believe me," Lynne said to the LA Times.
The notion of the Springfield album came from, of all people, Barry Manilow, who lives near Lynne. Then Lynne presented the idea to Phil Ramone, the producer who has won 14 Grammys for work with artists such as Ray Charles, Barbra Streisand and Paul Simon. Ramone recruited Al Schmitt to engineer the recording in historic Capital Studio A. All songs were recorded in live takes with no overdubs straight to 2 inch tape.
"You had to feel it to do this music, and I could feel it there," Lynne said. "Phil and Al let me pretend I was in control. That was nice of them. We cut the record the week Capitol Records busted up. So we're downstairs wondering why upstairs isn't coming down to check us out. Turns out there was no upstairs there!"
Just A Little Lovin' hits stores January 29th on Lost Highway records.
