Rocko Knocks Out with "Self-Made" Album Listening Session
Tonight (2/26), So So Def/Island Urban hosted an album listening event for Self-Made, Rocko’s upcoming, debut album, in Midtown Manhattan’s infamous Fight Klub - a perfect venue if you’re really trying to launch a Hip Hop artist. Through the steel door of an old building, into a freight elevator, to the top floor, down a hall walled in a mural of the Legends and into an open, speaker laced room - Fight Klub is a great spot to go and really just listen to the music. Check the DVD’s for a better picture.
A slightly odd occurence for a Rap event, Rocko arrived pretty much on time. Flanked by handheld cameras at nearly every possible angle, he grabbed the mic, and gave the crowd the typical track-by-track introduction. Showing the depth of the passion that he has for his music, Rocko even broke into mini performances of his tracks.
The Atlanta rapper truly brought the Southern Swag and mixed it with New York Attitude with tonight's listening session: The beers and picnic food epitomized a picnic during a warm Atlanta afternoon and booming drums blasting from the corners of the low-ceilinged room, while listeners gathered around beams and a pool table, nodding their heads to Hip Hop explained the New York state of mind as clearly as anything could.
You might not realize it, but Rocko’s worked for years writing and producing for, and helping to develop the careers of some of the South’s most well-known artists: Young Dro, Pastor Troy, Dem Franchize Boyz and Lil’ Flip to name a few. In 2006 he started recording his own tracks and only a few months in had come across some success, "Once I realized that people were feeling me I just went out and hit the streets real hard," recalled Rocko.
“Mr. Southern Swag’s” debut album is fittingly titled, Self-Made. The album is littered with tracks explaining the mindset of someone who truly is just that, making it one of the most expressive album titles of recent memory. Every track on the album explained a different aspect the definition of what it is to be Self-Made - “Umma Do Me”, the anthem and lead single, depicts what it is to be take full pride in grindin’ for “Self”; “Hustle For It”, which features Lloyd, explains the qualities it takes to reach “Made” level; “Busy” expresses the hustle needed to constantly strive to further the “Self Made” status and “Tomorrow” conveys the humbleness that’s needed in to maintain it.
Shout to Lowkey for attending and showing love to the new IDJ/So So Def artist. Check out his review of the night's happenings Here.
