musicFIRST: Can it make a difference?
musicFIRST (Fairness In Radio Starting Today) is an organization committed to ending what they call the unfair and dishonest business practices of AM and FM radio stations. On February 12th, the executive director of musicFIRST, Jennifer Bendall, released a strongly worded statement accusing corporate radio of knowingly refusing to compensate the very artists who they owe for their fiscal success – which she puts at roughly “$16 billion a year in advertising revenue.”
Bendall explains that all other music mediums (like satellite radio, internet radio and cable television music stations) “pay a fair performance royalty to artists and musicians.” Only AM and FM radio refuses to pay the performing artists for the music they provide to the station’s listeners. How successful Bendall and musicFIRST will be in their efforts to create a balanced playing field for all music platforms remains to be seen. Yet with such outspoken individuals pushing the envelope, this is far from the last time we will be hearing about musicFIRST.
