Kanye Dedicates Song To Obama at "Be The Change" Inauguration Concert
Over the past few weeks many artists across the music spectrum have expressed their excitement through their music as a result of newly inaugurated President Barack Obama. Among these artists include such prominent hip-hop stars as Jay-Z , Young Jeezy, and most recently Kanye West. On January 20th Kanye had the privilege of performing at President Obama’s “Be the Change” Youth Ball. He performed such crowd pleasers as “Stronger,” “Good Life” and the President’s favorite “Touch the Sky.” Much like Jay-Z who included the President’s name in his verse in the Remix of Young Jeezy’s “My President” only a few days earlier, Kanye slightly altered the chorus of his hit single “Heartless” to not only pay tribute to the social progress which America has made with this past election, but also to honor America’s first African American President.
Kanye’s slightly changed chorus goes as follows:
“In the night I hear them talk
The greatest story ever told
Somewhere far along this road
A new soul: Obama…”
Kanye felt especially connected with this huge achievement for the African American community and their struggle for civil rights, due to his mother’s involvement in the historical civil rights sit-ins at a very young age. In fact, in Kanye’s appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien this past November, to promote his latest album 808s and Heartbreak, he likens his battle against paparazzi abuse of celebrities to the battle for civil rights saying “I’m going to make a change and I think it’s my responsibility. My mom got arrested for being in sit-ins at age six. My grandfather drove the first care in the marches leading out of Oklahoma. My father was an activist. So I think they’re messing with the wrong celebrity right now.”
Kanye is quoted as having told the crowd during an instrumental break in “Heartless” that his mother “would be so proud right now, to see her baby boy performing the number one song in the country for our new African-American president.”
