In the remix of Young Jeezy’s song "My President", Jay-Z’s addition makes mention of some influential African Americans over the course of recent American political history. His verse includes such prominent figures as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and newly inaugurated President Barack Obama. His lyrics touch upon the emotions which many African Americans are experiencing as a result of President Obama’s election and inauguration, one of excitement and hope.
Jay-Z’s lyrics reflect on the progression which made President Obama’s election as the 44th President of the United States possible. He goes on to express the anticipation for future achievements of the African American community and the now attainable potential which every American child now possesses regardless of race.
In an interview with MTV on January 19th just prior to his show at Warner Theatre, Jay-Z explained his verse in the ‘My President’ Remix and is quoted as having said:
"You know, just the progression and how far we've come as a nation. It feels good to say that, 'cause I never had that type of feeling to say as a nation, like I was part of the American dream. And I believe a lot of people didn't feel like a part of the American process for so long."
"Now there's no excuses for anybody," the rapper continued. "Now you can look into a child's eyes and say, 'Get it together. You can be president.' It's not an easy thing, but it can happen. And we have evidence to the fact."
